What they don't tell you upfront.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.

Delivering a strategy that is right but unadoptable

Why:Design Strategists sometimes produce technically correct recommendations that the client organisation doesn't have the capability, budget, or cultural readiness to implement — because the strategist didn't diagnose organisational readiness as part of the research. A perfect strategy that doesn't get implemented has zero impact.

Instead:Include an organisational feasibility lens in your research: interview mid-level managers (not just C-suite) about implementation constraints, assess the design team's capability relative to the recommendation, and build phased roadmaps with a 'starter' version that the org can execute today alongside the full-vision version.

Confusing process artefacts with strategic deliverables

Why:Journey maps, empathy maps, and service blueprints are research and synthesis tools — not strategy deliverables. Presenting a detailed journey map as the output of a design strategy engagement mistakes the methodology for the product. Clients who pay for design strategy expect a recommendation about what to do, not a documentation of what currently exists.

Instead:Use journey maps and blueprints as internal synthesis tools, then translate the insights into strategic opportunity maps, design briefs, and investment scenarios that answer 'what should we do and why?' These are the actual deliverables — the artefacts are supporting evidence.

Running research to confirm rather than challenge the client's hypothesis

Why:When clients brief a design strategy engagement, they often already have a preferred answer. Inexperienced strategists design research that implicitly confirms the client's existing view rather than stress-testing it — which produces beautiful research that teaches the client nothing new and doesn't change any decisions.

Instead:Include at least one explicit 'hypothesis stress-test' in the research plan: a research question specifically designed to find evidence against the client's working assumption. The most valuable strategic findings are the ones that contradict prior belief — they are also the hardest to present, which is why junior strategists avoid them.

Using Western design frameworks uncritically in Indian contexts

Why:Methodologies like IDEO's HCD or Stanford d.school design thinking were developed primarily in Western, individualistic, high-literacy, urban contexts. Applying them directly to Indian rural, semi-urban, or low-digital-literacy contexts often produces misleading findings — participants in Indian field research respond differently to research stimuli than WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic) research design assumes.

Instead:Adapt the methodology for the Indian context: use photo elicitation rather than abstract prompts for low-literacy users, conduct family-unit interviews rather than individual interviews for collective-decision-making households, build in regional language facilitation, and calibrate for social desirability bias in Indian participant responses.

Operates upstream of execution — Design Strategists define the design problem, meaning their leverage over outcomes is disproportionate to headcount: a well-framed brief shapes the work of 30 downstream designers.
Cross-industry variety: a single year may include redesigning a rural FMCG distribution model, defining the innovation pipeline for a pharma brand, and setting the UX vision for a fintech's merchant product. The intellectual range is exceptional.
Premium compensation in India relative to craft-focused design roles — senior design strategists at MNC consultancies earn more than senior UX or service designers at equivalent seniority because business impact is directly attributable.
Strong international portability: the role is practiced identically in New York, London, Singapore, and Amsterdam, making it one of the highest-mobility careers in the Indian design ecosystem.

The catch

—Role is frequently misunderstood or misscoped inside organisations — a company that calls you a 'Design Strategist' but has you doing production design work is not an uncommon experience, requiring negotiation of the actual remit.
—Thin explicit job market in India: most roles are embedded inside broader titles ('Senior Designer', 'Design Lead', 'Innovation Consultant') and require reading between lines on JDs to identify strategy-level work.
