Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Arrive at office and review the overnight email from the ASI Superintending Archaeologist requesting revisions to the proposed lime plaster specification for a 16th-century mosque's inner chamber — cross-check against INTACH's Conservation Specifications Compendium and draft a technical response
Process the previous day's drone photogrammetry capture in Agisoft Metashape: align 240 images, build dense point cloud of the fort's north bastion, export orthophoto to AutoCAD as underlay and begin tracing crack patterns and spalling zones onto the elevation damage map
Video call with the structural conservation engineer reviewing the bastion's crack pattern map — agree to recommend stainless-steel helical bar stitching for the diagonal shear cracks and schedule a ground-penetrating radar scan of the plinth to check for subsurface voids
Write the Significance Assessment section of the Conservation Management Plan for a colonial-era railway station in Gujarat — categorise historic, architectural, social, and aesthetic values, citing archival photographs from the Maharashtra State Archives and original PWD engineering drawings
Site inspection at the railway station: walk all structural bays with the lime mortar specialist, photograph delaminating plaster patches and corroded cast-iron column bases, update the damage register with GPS-tagged photographs, and brief the mason kariger on stopping Portland cement patching applied by the railway's maintenance crew
Attend Heritage Conservation Committee presentation via video call to seek NOC for the first phase of an adaptive reuse conversion of a Raj-era warehouse — field questions on reversibility of mezzanine insertions and confirm that new structural elements are visible as contemporary without mimicking original industrial ironwork
Prepare the Bill of Quantities for Phase 1 lime mortar repointing works: measure facade areas from the damage map, apply INTACH schedule rates for raking-out and repointing in NHL lime, compile the BoQ spreadsheet for the contractor tender package due Monday
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
5-year B.Arch from a CoA-recognised school followed by a 2-year M.Arch in Architectural Conservation from SPA Delhi, CEPT Ahmedabad (Urban Conservation & Management), or SPA Bhopal. CoA registration is mandatory to sign off design and conservation drawings under the Architects Act 1972. A Master's in Conservation is near-mandatory for ASI and INTACH project roles.
UNESCO-ICCROM Conservation Studies (Rome, with field projects in India), NID's Heritage Management programme, or a postgrad diploma in Urban Heritage Management from IGNCA. International degrees from UCL, Edinburgh, or Columbia GSAPP are accepted at international-mandate bodies (UNESCO, World Monuments Fund, Aga Khan Trust for Culture) operating in India.
ASI's Conservation Assistant and Junior Conservation Assistant cadres are recruited via UPSC / departmental exams; a B.Arch with a conservation portfolio is the minimum bar, with M.Arch in Conservation preferred. State archaeology departments (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Delhi) hire similarly.
Critical certifications and credentials: INTACH Intach Heritage Academy courses (Lime Technology, Structural Assessment of Historic Structures, Archival Photography) are recognised by ASI-empanelled firms. For adaptive reuse commissions, GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) and LEED ID+C or BD+C credentials are increasingly required by state tourism departments awarding heritage-hotel conversions.
A B.Arch graduate with a strong conservation portfolio can enter junior conservation technician roles at INTACH regional chapters or at empanelled private practices; M.Arch is then pursued in parallel. NATA/JEE Paper 2 scores for B.Arch entry are the upstream gate.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Using Portland cement mortar for repointing or gap-filling on historic masonry
Confusing state-protected and centrally protected (ASI) monument regulatory regimes
Designing adaptive reuse interventions that mimic historic architectural language rather than reading as clearly contemporary
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
Books, longreads, and references practitioners come back to.
