India-first salary signal — fresh-grad to leadership, the cities where it pays best, and what each level is worth on the open market.
Entry: domestic clients via Freelancer.in/Internshala ₹2-6L. Mid (Upwork Top-Rated, $18-35/hr at ~100 billable hr/month): ₹8-18L. Senior (Toptal or Upwork Expert-Vetted, $50-100/hr): ₹20-50L. Elite (direct enterprise, $100-200/hr, fractional CTO or niche specialist): ₹50L-2Cr+.
Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Triage overnight messages from US and EU clients on Slack and email — set async responses, flag urgent blockers, and reprioritise the day's delivery list before opening VS Code
Deep coding block: build the assigned feature on a React/Node retainer project — write code, add unit tests, push to a feature branch, and open a descriptive pull request against the client's repo
30-minute client sync via Google Meet — demo yesterday's shipped work, get feedback on the PR, clarify acceptance criteria for the next feature, and confirm no scope changes are pending
Business development: scan Upwork for new listings in your stack with fewer than 15 proposals, write one personalised proposal with a Loom walkthrough of a relevant prior project
Lunch break — step away from screens; this doubles as a mental reset that improves afternoon problem-solving quality (freelancers who skip breaks burn out faster)
Second coding block: address morning PR review comments, debug a production issue flagged by a second client, and document the fix in a shared Notion page for the client's engineering team
Log hours in Toggl, update the weekly invoice draft for hourly retainer clients, generate a PDF invoice via Zoho Invoice or Wave, and queue it for end-of-week send via email
Review or draft a Statement of Work amendment for any scope expansion requested during the day — never let undocumented scope accumulate; send the change-request estimate before EOD
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
No mandatory credential — clients hire on portfolio, live code tests (Toptal's three-round technical screen, Upwork's skill tests), and GitHub/deployed work. A degree in CS or IT is a signal, not a requirement, and increasingly irrelevant past year 2 of a strong freelance track record.
B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science or IT, BCA, or MCA from any Indian university — the degree gets you over the initial credibility hurdle with conservative Indian clients but does nothing for Upwork/Toptal selection.
3-5 deployed projects (ideally with live URL, real users, open-source code, or paying clients) beat any certification on international platforms. Bootcamp graduates from Masai, Newton School, or Scaler Academy with strong portfolios compete equally.
Toptal's screening includes an English communication round, two algorithm-and-data-structures coding sessions (LeetCode medium-hard difficulty), a take-home project, and a live technical interview. Passing rates are below 3% — preparation takes 3-6 months of focused LeetCode + system-design study.
Business and legal literacy is non-optional: GST registration, LUT for export invoicing, invoicing via Razorpay/Stripe, basic SoW/contract templates (deliverables, IP ownership under Section 14 Indian Copyright Act, payment milestones, kill fee clauses), and FEMA compliance for USD inflows via AD-category banks.
AWS Certified Developer (Associate or Professional), Google Cloud Professional Developer, Meta React Developer, or MongoDB Associate Developer. These reduce screening friction with international clients and justify rate premiums of 15-25%.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.
