Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Arrive at the dealing floor, Nariman Point / BKC — open Bloomberg, check overnight USD-INR NDF levels in Singapore (typically active 5:30-8:00 AM IST), US 10Y yield, Fed Funds futures, and any RBI press releases or circulars issued after close yesterday
Morning market brief: cross-currency rates (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, JPY/USD), EM FX overnight moves, Brent crude (rupee sensitivity), and India-specific: 10Y G-sec overnight yield, MIBOR fixing expectation, any Sebi/RBI circulars hitting Refinitiv newswire
Run the opening position report — mark all FX open positions, G-sec MTM, and IRS mark-to-market against close-of-day levels; verify overnight open position is within OOPL (RBI overnight limit); flag any positions approaching 80% of limit to the Chief Dealer
Market opens — first USD-INR spot trades hit the Reuters Dealing platform; quote two-way ₹0.03 spread on USD-INR spot to the first corporate client call; execute any pre-open client orders sitting on the book
NDS-OM G-sec session opens — monitor 10Y and 5Y G-sec yield movements, place bids on any securities the SLR portfolio needs to top up; watch the repo/reverse-repo rate at CCIL for overnight cost-of-carry signals
High-volume FX window — corporate client flow picks up as treasurer offices open; handle 4-6 USD-INR forward quotes for pharma exporters and auto-sector importers; update forward book and hedge residual NOP via interbank market
Lunch at desk — canteen delivery; market continues; keep Bloomberg chat open for interbank messages; CCIL FX-CLEAR net open position snapshot reviewed
Interbank money-market: check overnight call money rates, decide whether to lend surplus liquidity in the CBLO/TREP market or keep reserve for afternoon FX flow
G-sec auction result day (Friday) or RBI OMO notification — react to auction cut-off yields, adjust G-sec portfolio duration if cut-off differs from market expectation by more than 2-3 bps; update Chief Dealer on portfolio impact
Final corporate FX client flow window — large corporate import payments often settle today for value-date two days later; handle the last USD-INR quotes; square any end-of-day residual NOP within OOPL
US market opens — USD-INR NDF activity picks up; monitor FOMC speaker comments on Bloomberg Newswire; any major US data (payroll, CPI on the calendar) requires a decision on whether to hedge overnight INR exposure
Prepare daily dealing-room P&L report: FX P&L (spot + forward + options), G-sec P&L (MTM + accrual), IRS MTM; submit to Chief Dealer; send treasury MIS to CFO group if required this week
On FOMC and RBI policy days: stay until 8:30-10:00 PM to trade the announcement; on normal days — check next-day CRR obligation, any overnight news risk, then leave; expiry and budget weeks run to 9:00 PM routinely
