Draft claims for a semiconductor client's new finFET gate-oxide application — write three independent claims (product, method, and system) with fallback dependent claims covering specific dielectric materials, deposition temperatures, and oxide thicknesses to build layered prosecution scope.
Prepare FER reply for a biotech client's CRISPR-based gene-editing tool — argue inventive step under Section 2(1)(ja) by distinguishing the four cited documents, address the Section 3(j) essentially-biological-processes objection by showing the claimed method uses a defined non-biological CRISPR machinery, and draft claim amendments for the dependent fallback.

Client call with in-house IP manager at a Hyderabad pharma company — review three patent applications due for PCT national-phase entry into the US and Europe within 45 days, confirm claim strategy adjustments for EPO's stricter unity-of-invention requirements, and align on prosecution budget for each family.
File a complete patent application on the IP India e-filing portal: upload Form 1 (application), Form 2 (complete specification with claims and drawings), Form 26 (power of attorney), and pay the startup-category fee (80% discount); verify docket system entry and set FER-deadline calendar alert.

Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or technology from a recognized university — B.Tech, B.E., B.Sc (Physics/Chemistry/Biotechnology) are all eligible. Pure arts, law, or commerce graduates are ineligible for Patent Agent registration under Section 126 of the Patents Act 1970.
A two-paper exam administered by CGPDTM testing the Patents Act 1970, Patent Rules 2003, PCT procedure, and patent drafting skills. Paper I is objective; Paper II requires a drafting exercise. Pass rate is typically 15–25%, and many candidates take 2–3 attempts.
B.Tech/B.Sc + 1-year LLB or IP law diploma (NALSAR, NLU Delhi, Asian School of Cyber Laws) to handle licensing and FTO opinions more independently; a full 3-year LL.B makes you a patent attorney (who can also litigate).
M.Tech, M.Sc, or Ph.D. in a technical specialty (organic chemistry, semiconductor physics, biotech, computer science) commands stronger docket allocations and higher fees at pharma and electronics firms — depth matters more than breadth.
WIPO Academy Distance Learning courses (DL-101, DL-201) in IP fundamentals; INTA education modules for trademark cross-training; Derwent Innovation / Questel orbit patent database certifications used by IP firms for prior-art search work.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Filing a patent application without conducting a prior-art search first
Treating Section 3(d) as an absolute bar for all pharmaceutical patents
Missing the 12-month FER reply deadline by treating it as an approximate guideline
Drafting only one independent claim and building all dependent claims from it
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
Books, longreads, and references practitioners come back to.
