India's molecular biology capital. PhD Scientist I at Biocon/Syngene ₹12-18L; NCBS post-doc ₹6-10L + housing; IISc Assistant Professor ₹16-22L effective with fellowship top-ups.
CCMB is India's top molecular biology CSIR lab; Scientist-C entry ₹12-14L. Dr Reddy's discovery biology team hires post-PhD scientists at ₹14-22L. Lower cost-of-living than Bengaluru amplifies effective pay.
NII and IGIB are CSIR flagship molecular biology institutes. JNU M.Sc. Molecular Biology is the most reputed standalone M.Sc. programme in India. AIIMS Biochemistry faculty roles ₹14-28L.
TIFR DBS is a global-quality molecular biology department — PhD quality rivals NCBS. ACTREC Tata Memorial is India's leading cancer molecular biology clinical-research interface. High Mumbai cost-of-living compresses real take-home for stipend positions.
IISER Pune is tier-1 for PhD training. Serum Institute molecular biology team focuses on vaccine antigen expression and viral vector production — niche but high-demand applied molecular biology.
Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Check overnight cell-culture incubators — log temperature, CO₂ levels, and confluency in Benchling ELN; passage HEK293T cells seeded two days ago that are now at 70% and ready for tomorrow's transfection
Set up RT-qPCR plate to validate CRISPR-edited clones from last week's electroporation: prepare master mix with gene-specific primers and GAPDH reference, load 96-well plate, spin, and start the QuantStudio 5 thermocycler (45-min run)
Analyse Western blot ECL film from yesterday's overnight exposure in ImageJ/Fiji — quantify band intensities, normalise to β-actin loading control, build a bar graph in GraphPad Prism, and update the figure in the lab's Benchling notebook
Lab group meeting or journal club (rotates weekly at NCBS): present qRT-PCR and Western blot data on the lncRNA-cancer-migration project; receive PI and peer feedback; assign follow-up experiments
Prepare lipofection experiment for the afternoon: calculate Lipofectamine-to-DNA ratios for 6-well plate format, dilute plasmid DNA (miniprep from yesterday, 500 ng/well), set up complexes in OptiMEM, and add dropwise to 60% confluent HeLa cells after 20-minute incubation
Design two new sgRNA sequences for a CRISPR knockin targeting gene Y: run CRISPOR against GRCh38, compare off-target scores, verify PAM availability at the insertion site, and order synthetic oligonucleotides from Sigma-Aldrich India (2–3 day delivery to Bengaluru)
Mentoring session: walk a junior PhD scholar through troubleshooting a failed co-immunoprecipitation — review antibody lot number, lysis buffer composition (NP-40 vs RIPA), and suggest titrating the antibody on an input control Western before repeating the Co-IP
Write or revise manuscript section: update the results paragraph for Figure 3 based on today's qRT-PCR analysis; respond to one reviewer comment in the revision tracker; save all updated raw data files to the lab's shared Google Drive
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
M.Sc. in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Life Sciences from a NAAC-accredited central or state university. IISc integrated programmes (B.S.-M.S.) and IIT-JAM M.Sc. are the most competitive entry routes for tier-1 PhD slots.
PhD (mandatory for independent research and CSIR/ICMR scientist tracks): funded positions via CSIR-UGC NET JRF (₹37K/month), DBT-JRF (₹37K/month), or ICMR-JRF — all require clearing a national competitive exam. Duration: 4-6 years at NCBS, CCMB, NII, IGIB, IISc, IISER network, or IIT biosciences departments.
Post-doctoral training (2-3 years): typically at a different institute or abroad (NIH, EMBL, MRC, Max Planck); mandatory for faculty positions and senior scientist roles in academic-adjacent industry. Wellcome-DBT India Alliance Early Career and Intermediate Fellowships are the most prestigious domestic post-doc funding routes.
M.Sc. + CSIR-NET (LS) qualificationopens Research Associate roles at Syngene, Biocon, Anthem Biosciences, and Jubilant Biosys (CRO sector) at ₹4-8L. PhD fast-tracks to Scientist I/II at ₹12-18L.
EMBL Practical Courses (Heidelberg), CSIR-CCAMP skill-training (Bengaluru), Indian Society for Cell Biology workshops, and vendor-led CRISPR/flow-cytometry training (Thermo Fisher CST, BD Biosciences) are the main upskilling routes for working scientists.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

Indian Society for Cell Biology (ISCB)
Society + Annual meetingThe primary meeting for Indian cell and molecular biologists — annual ISCB conference rotates across IISc, NCBS, CCMB, IISER. Best networking venue for PhD scholars to meet PIs at top Indian and visiting international labs.
IndiaBioscience
Community portal + jobs boardSingle best aggregator for Indian life-science PhD/post-doc/faculty/fellowship openings. Also publishes career articles, opinion pieces, and policy updates relevant to molecular biologists.
DBT-Wellcome Trust India Alliance
Fellowship communityPremier early- and mid-career fellowship for Indian biomedical scientists. Most tier-1 Indian molecular biologists under 50 are India Alliance fellows or alumni — the network is the effective 'who's who' of Indian molecular biology.
Society of Biological Chemists India (SBC-I)
Society + JournalOldest Indian biochemistry/molecular biology society; annual meeting rotates across CSIR labs and IITs. Relevant for molecular biologists whose work overlaps biochemistry, enzymology, or structural biology.
EMBO Global Exchange Programme
International fellowshipProvides short-term (1-3 month) lab exchange funding for Indian PhD scholars and post-docs to visit EMBO member labs in Europe — the most accessible India-to-Europe molecular biology exchange programme.
The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Staying purely wet-lab and never adding computational fluency
Choosing a PhD lab for prestige of PI name rather than scientific fit
Not doing a post-doc abroad after PhD
Underestimating how long CRISPR validation actually takes in primary cells
Ignoring patent and IP literacy in industrial molecular biology roles
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
Books, longreads, and references practitioners come back to.
