Entry (0-2y): ONGC Executive Trainee (Drilling) via GATE ₹13-16L gross with allowances, township housing; OFS field engineers (Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes) ₹10-18L with drilling-operation premiums; Cairn / Reliance E&P graduate entry ₹8-14L. Mid (Drilling Engineer, 2-7y): ONGC ₹16-28L, Cairn / Reliance ₹20-35L, OFS field roles ₹22-38L with offshore and night-shift premiums. Senior / Superintendent (7-14y): ONGC ₹28-50L, private E&P ₹40-65L, OFS senior roles ₹45-70L. Drilling Manager / Wells Manager (14+y): ONGC ₹45-65L, private E&P ₹65-1Cr, OFS country/programme leads ₹70L-1.5Cr. Middle East rotation (Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, QatarEnergy, Kuwait Oil, PDO Oman) adds 2-3x India CTC tax-free for IWCF Level 3-4 certified engineers with offshore or ERD experience.
Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Read overnight drilling report on phone before reaching the office — check depth made good, mud-weight changes the shift crew applied, any stuck-pipe or gas-cut mud events. Flag abnormals in a WhatsApp message to the Drilling Superintendent.
Reach the asset office or rig camp; change into fire-retardant coveralls and steel-toe boots. Pull LWD real-time feed on the office workstation — compare gamma-ray and resistivity log against the prognosis.
Daily drilling conference call — Drilling Superintendent, Company Man, mud engineer, directional driller, cementing rep. Review yesterday's performance, agree critical decisions for today: when to pull out of hole, which bit to run next, mud-weight adjustment authorisation.
Hydraulics review in WellPlan / Drillbench — recalculate ECD and surge pressure for the upcoming casing run; confirm the mud-weight window still holds after the latest survey shot placed TVD at 3,412m.
Coordinate cementing programme with Halliburton cementing field engineer — finalise slurry design, spacer volumes, pump rates for the 9-5/8 in. casing shoe, and well-conditioning duration before cement job.
Lunch in the field mess — the one informal break where rig-crew stories, near-miss patterns, and stuck-pipe war stories circulate; senior engineers use this time to debrief juniors on past incidents.
AFE cost tracking — update actual drilling cost against approved AFE; flag mud-weight increase that required extra barite consumption (₹3L over projection); draft variance note for the asset manager.
Go to rig floor for BHA pick-up and make-up — witness connection torques on the PDC bit, motor, MWD collar, and stabilizers; sign the BHA tally sheet; brief the driller on WOB and RPM limits.
OISD compliance review with HSE — update the well-control equipment test register (BOP pressure tests, choke-and-kill manifold test, accumulator pre-charge check); sign off the weekly well-integrity log.
Leave field camp or office. Phone is never fully off — stuck-pipe event, kick, or bit drop at 11 PM is a full-response call. On normal nights, review the 6 PM drilling report and reply to directional driller's survey update.
On-call response if rig flags abnormal event — a 9x gas increase at 2,800m means a 45-minute phone bridge with the Company Man and Drilling Superintendent executing IWCF flow-check protocol.
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering — IIT-ISM Dhanbad is the strongest signal, with PDEU Gandhinagar, RGIPT Jais, and UPES Dehradun as solid alternatives. The drilling-engineering elective in the petroleum curriculum — covering casing design, hydraulics, directional drilling, and well control — is the core technical preparation for this role.
B.Tech in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with a final-year project specifically on drilling engineering, mud hydraulics, or BHA design; ONGC and OFS majors (Schlumberger, Halliburton) accept these when combined with internship exposure at a rig or well-planning office.
GATE (Petroleum Engineering; Mechanical and Chemical codes also accepted at ONGC) and ONGC's separate written exam are the standard route for permanent PSU roles. ONGC's Executive Trainee (Drilling) stream is the most direct path — it places freshers directly into drilling-engineering rotations at onshore and offshore assets.
M.Tech / MS specialisations that accelerate: Drilling Engineering, Well Engineering, or Petroleum Engineering with a drilling focus from IIT-ISM Dhanbad, PDEU, RGIPT, or international programmes (Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, University of Oklahoma, Texas A&M, TU Delft). International MS is the most common step for engineers targeting Middle East national oil company (NOC) staff roles.
Mandatory certifications for field roles: IWCF (International Well Control Forum) Level 2 is required before any unsupervised rig-floor responsibility; Level 3 and 4 are required for Drilling Superintendent and Drilling Engineer sign-off authority. BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) and HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) are mandatory for any offshore rotation (Mumbai High, KG offshore platforms).
IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) WellSharp certification, OPITO-certified well control, Pason / National Oilwell Varco rig-instrumentation training, and Halliburton / Schlumberger drilling-software training (WellPlan, Landmark DSS, Drillbench). SPE membership and at least one published SPE paper by year 6-8 signals seniority for international roles.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Treating IWCF Level 2 as a one-time bureaucratic box rather than the foundation of daily practice
Optimising for ROP at the cost of wellbore quality in the reservoir section
Skipping the post-well review and closing the AFE without a formal NPT analysis
Dismissing pore-pressure uncertainty at the casing-shoe planning stage
Refusing the Middle East rotation because of family lifestyle concerns without a structured plan
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
Books, longreads, and references practitioners come back to.
