Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Wake up, morning chai. Check both Uber and Ola driver apps for any surge alerts or bonus updates before heading out. Inspect the CNG level — need at least half tank to start the peak window without a fuel stop.
Go online on Uber app. Position near Whitefield ITPL gate — first rides are IT employees heading to Manyata or Bagmane tech parks. Surge at 1.4–1.6x during this window. First 2 rides done by 7:10 AM (gross ₹240).
Morning peak in full swing — back-to-back Uber rides with minimal dead kilometres. Airport runs start appearing; accept a Kempegowda Airport ride at ₹850 (24 km, 1.2x surge). Use the Ola driver app to pick up a return airport passenger from Terminal 1 while exiting the airport queue (dual-app trick to eliminate empty return leg).
Post-peak lull. CNG fill at the Brookefield station — 25-minute queue. Review morning earnings on the app dashboard: 9 rides, ₹2,400 gross. On track for the Ola 12-ride daily bonus (₹500 extra).
Midday rides from Indiranagar — hospital trips, mall drop-offs, corporate one-way runs. Accept selectively; avoid very short 1–2 km rides that waste time in apartment-complex entry queues. Target ₹120+ per ride during this slower period.
Lunch break at a driver rest shed near the Ola partner centre, Whitefield. Rice meal ₹65. Nap for 20 minutes in the car — drivers who skip rest accumulate fatigue by 7 PM and make navigation errors in heavy traffic.
Back online. Afternoon rides — school pickups, evening-shift office workers, a couple heading to a mall. Cross-check: Uber surge is 1.1x in Koramangala, Ola showing 1.3x in the same area. Switch Ola app priority for the next 30 minutes.
Evening peak — highest-earnings window. Position near Indiranagar 100 Feet Road and MG Road metro exits. Surge at 1.8–2.2x. Four rides back-to-back; one passenger heading to Whitefield (aligned with home direction). Total rides now 18; hit the Ola daily bonus at ride 12.
End-of-shift reconciliation. 21 rides today. Uber app shows gross ₹4,200 (after platform deduction already applied). Ola gross ₹1,100 + ₹500 daily bonus. Daily CNG spend: ₹760. Net day earnings approximately ₹4,040. Log off both apps, drive home.
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
Valid four-wheeler driving licence (LMV or Transport Vehicle category) with at least 3 years' experience on a non-commercial licence before applying for a commercial badge (yellow-number-plate permit) under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Drivers must obtain a Public Service Vehicle badge from the regional transport authority — requires a clean traffic-violation record, medical fitness certificate, and local-area knowledge test. Badge renewal is typically every 3–5 years depending on state.
Aadhaar, PAN, a valid commercial-category driving licence, vehicle RC book showing the car is aggregator-eligible (post-2013 petrol or CNG, post-2015 diesel in most states), pollution under control (PUC) certificate, and a smartphone (Android 9+). Ola onboarding is done via its driver app; Uber via the Uber Driver app.
No formal academic minimum — literacy in the local language (reading street names, addresses, app prompts) is functional requirement. Drivers who can read English navigate multi-lingual app interfaces more easily and handle airport/corporate rides with higher-rated passengers.
Familiarity with city geography, knowledge of alternate routes during traffic (especially NH-48 vs service roads in Bengaluru, or Eastern Freeway vs LBS Marg in Mumbai). Drivers who supplement navigation with mental map knowledge receive better ratings and handle map-app failures more confidently.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Quoting gross earnings as net income
Ignoring acceptance rate and cancellation rate impact on bonuses
Delaying vehicle maintenance to save money in the short term
Not registering for GST when operating as a fleet owner
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
