Strong — India has roughly 12,000–15,000 trained RTs for a country with 1.4 billion people, 300+ tier-1 multi-specialty hospitals, and an estimated 50,000 ICU beds. The COVID-19 pandemic structurally elevated the RT role in Indian critical care and triggered a training programme expansion at AIIMS (new centres), Narayana Health, and Manipal. COPD affects an estimated 55 million Indians (ICMR 2024 burden data), and with India's air quality crisis, pulmonary-disease burden will continue growing — creating long-term demand for both ICU RTs and outpatient pulmonary rehab specialists.
