Epidemiologist Salary in India 2026

Strong — post-COVID India has materially expanded its epidemiology workforce demand. ICMR expanded Scientist recruitment across NIE Chennai, NIRT, NIN Hyderabad, and NCMH; NCDC scaled its Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) digital infrastructure and field staff. WHO India, CDC India, BMGF, and bilateral health programmes (USAID, UK FCDO) have sustained and in some cases increased India-based epidemiology positions. FETP India produces approximately 20–30 fully trained field epidemiologists per year — far below the 2,000+ epidemiologist deficit estimated across Indian states. Demand for epidemiologists who can also do spatial analysis (QGIS), machine-learning-assisted syndromic surveillance, and pharmacoepidemiology for real-world evidence studies is the fastest-growing segment through 2030.
