The day-to-day is doctor detailing (a structured 3–5 minute clinical conversation at the clinic or hospital), chemist visits to track prescription fulfilment and boost stocking, sample and gift distribution within UCPMP 2024 limits (no cash, gifts capped at ₹1,000), and monthly target-tracking against per-territory prescriptions. The UCPMP (Uniform Code of Pharma Marketing Practices) 2024 tightened the compliance framework — MRs now work under stricter documentation and gift-cap rules. Biosimilars and generic substitution (under the amended Drugs Rules) are reshaping the detailing pitch; MRs need to understand therapeutic equivalence, DPCO 2013 price-controlled molecules, and NPPA price-fixing to hold conversations with increasingly cost-conscious doctors and hospital formulary committees. Entry is via B.Sc/B.Pharm/BBA + company training. Career progression runs from MR → Senior MR → Area Sales Manager (ASM) → Regional Sales Manager (RSM) → Zonal Sales Manager (ZSM) → National Sales Manager, with strong variable-pay incentives at every rung.
