India-first salary signal — fresh-grad to leadership, the cities where it pays best, and what each level is worth on the open market.
Entry (0-2y, CCNA fresher): TCS/Infosys/Wipro NOC ₹3.5-5L; mid-tier enterprises ₹4-7L; Cisco/Juniper India ₹6-10L. Mid-level (2-5y, CCNP track): service companies ₹8-14L; enterprise IT (banks, manufacturing) ₹10-18L; telecom (Airtel Business, Jio Enterprise) ₹12-20L. Senior (5-10y, CCNP/CCIE): ₹18-35L depending on CCIE status and employer. Fresh CCIE holders: ₹18-25L; experienced CCIE architects at Tata Comms/Cisco India/large banks: ₹35-50L. Network Architect/Lead (10+y, CCIE): ₹35-70L; top-of-market at Cisco India, Jio Platforms, or a large BFSI group can touch ₹80L-1Cr with CCIE + 15y experience.
Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Log into SolarWinds and scan overnight alert queue — check for interface flaps on branch WAN links, BGP session drops, high CPU/memory on core routers. Prioritise any alert affecting the Mumbai data-centre or SAP application cluster.
Attend the daily infrastructure standup (15 minutes, Teams call) — report the overnight alert summary, flag the SD-WAN branch in Pune that had intermittent jitter, and align with the server team on a scheduled VLAN addition today.
Review three change-request tickets in ServiceNow pending CAB approval — check config diffs submitted by juniors, verify rollback procedures are complete, and approve two routine VLAN changes; return one firewall change for clarification on destination subnet.
Troubleshoot a latency complaint from the application team: run traceroute and MTR from the affected endpoint, inspect QoS policy markings on the Cisco ASR, capture a short Wireshark trace on the access switch, and confirm the bottleneck is on the Airtel MPLS circuit (open a ticket with Airtel NOC).
Provision new VLAN 350 on three Nexus 9K switches for a new server rack — configure trunk ports, update STP root priority, verify end-to-end reachability with ping tests, and update the IPAM spreadsheet and draw.io topology diagram.
SD-WAN branch onboarding call for the Coimbatore office site — validate overlay tunnel health in Cisco vManage, configure QoS policy for voice traffic (DSCP EF on 46), run a voice-quality test using Cisco IP SLA, and sign off on the cutover checklist with the site coordinator.
Stage and test a firewall policy change in Palo Alto Panorama for the SAP RFC traffic request — confirm rule matches only the intended source/destination, run a shadow-rule check, deploy to staging policy, schedule production push for the 10 PM maintenance window.
Update network documentation in Confluence — capture the new Coimbatore SD-WAN branch in the topology diagram, document the Airtel MPLS ticket number and SLA timeline, and write a brief post-change note for the VLAN addition. End-of-day check that the 10 PM change is fully prepared.
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science, ECE, IT, or Electrical — the standard entry route. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, and Cisco India campus drives all target this stream. BCA / B.Sc (IT/CS) + certifications is a fully accepted alternative.
CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) — the single most important early credential in India for networking roles. Validates switching, routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP basics), VLANs, STP, ACLs, and basic wireless. Expected within the first 1-2 years.
CCNP Enterprise (routing/switching), CCNP Security (firewall, VPN, ASA/FTD), Juniper JNCIA/JNCIP, CompTIA Network+, AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, Azure Network Engineer Associate (AZ-700) — pick the track matching your employer's stack.
CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) — one of the hardest IT certifications globally. CCIE holders earn 40-80% premium over CCNP-only engineers in India. Most realistic at 7-10 years of experience; requires passing an 8-hour lab exam. Fewer than 70,000 active CCIE holders worldwide.
Diploma in Electronics / IT followed by CCNA, or a polytechnic background — viable for NOC (Network Operations Center) analyst roles at telecom operators (Airtel, Jio, BSNL), though B.Tech is usually needed to cross into design and architecture roles.
hybrid roles increasingly require AWS/Azure/GCP networking certifications alongside Cisco certs — AWS Advanced Networking Specialty or GCP Professional Cloud Network Engineer signals readiness for cloud-network integration projects at GCCs, banks, and product unicorns.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Skipping IPAM and relying on informal spreadsheets or memory for IP address management
Making production config changes without a written rollback procedure and a change ticket
Stacking Cisco certifications without developing cloud-networking or automation skills
Trusting vendor defaults for spanning-tree and never auditing the topology
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
