Fitters in India assemble, install, maintain, and repair mechanical components, structures, jigs, fixtures, and plant machinery across heavy industry and manufacturing. The ITI Fitter trade (2 years, NCVT-affiliated) is the foundational qualification — the broadest mechanical trade in the NCVT framework, covering precision measurement, fitting, machining, pipe-fitting, hydraulics, pneumatics, and assembly work. Primary employers are PSUs with structured apprenticeship programs: BHEL (Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet), HAL (Bangalore, Nashik, Lucknow), SAIL (Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela), ONGC, Indian Railways (mechanical workshops at Perambur, Chittaranjan, Parel), and Ordnance Factories. Private employers include L&T, Tata Steel, JSW, Reliance, Adani, and Thermax. Entry is via ITI + NCVT NTC followed by a 1-year apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act 1961. PSU fitters join through BHEL, HAL, or Railway Recruitment Board apprentice-to-permanent pipelines at Pay Matrix Level 2-4; senior fitters and foremen reach Level 5-6.
