EdTech Counsellors — officially titled 'Academic Counsellors' at BYJU'S, Vedantu, Unacademy, upGrad, PhysicsWallah, Cuemath, and Whitehat Jr — are phone-and-video sales agents who pitch test-prep, K-12 tuition, and skill-certification courses to students and their parents. Despite the academic-sounding title the role is unambiguously commission-heavy sales: callers work scripted decks, push EMI plans through Eduvanz, Bajaj FinServ EduFin, and NEFA-backed lenders, and are evaluated on conversion rate and revenue booked weekly. The 2022–23 BYJU'S crisis exposed the sector's predatory loan-based selling model — consumer protection complaints under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, ASCI guidelines, and NCFE refund-policy norms are now live compliance constraints. Entry is low-friction (any bachelor's degree, minimal experience required), but the pressure-cooker environment and high attrition mean most counsellors cycle through 2–3 edtech employers within 3 years before either advancing to team-lead or exiting the sector.
