India-first salary signal — fresh-grad to leadership, the cities where it pays best, and what each level is worth on the open market.
Fresher with B.Tech + SQL portfolio at IT services (TCS, Infosys, Wipro): ₹5-8L. Junior modeler at BFSI or mid-size product company: ₹8-14L. Mid-level (3-7 yrs) with CDMP + Erwin at a GCC (Goldman, Walmart Global Tech) or large BFSI: ₹15-28L. Senior Data Modeler / Data Architect at a product unicorn or large enterprise: ₹28-50L. Principal/Head of Data Architecture at large banks or MNC tech: ₹50L-1Cr+. Average all-experience salary reported around ₹16-21L (Glassdoor India / 6figr, 2026).
Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Open Collibra / Atlan and review overnight change requests — engineering teams at Bengaluru and Hyderabad offices have registered 3 new source tables from the freshly onboarded NBFC partner system. Classify entities, assign data owners, and flag missing business definitions before the tables enter the canonical model review queue.
Model session in Erwin Data Modeler — update the customer domain's logical model to add a 'consent_record' entity required for DPDP Act compliance. Map its relationships to 'customer_profile' and 'digital_interaction', define cardinality (one customer → many consent records), and generate updated DDL for review.
Architecture review call with the data engineering team — walk through the proposed star schema for the new marketing attribution warehouse. Identify a fan trap between the 'campaign' and 'conversion' fact tables that would cause revenue double-counting in Looker reports. Agree on a bridge table design with a weighting column.
Data profiling session — run SQL cardinality and NULL-rate checks on a new CRM export from the sales team. Flag that 'account_id' has 8% NULLs and 'phone' column mixes E.164 format and local Indian formats (10-digit vs 0-prefixed). Log findings in the data quality register and raise a remediation ticket.
Design two SCD Type-2 dimension tables ('dim_account' and 'dim_cost_center') for the finance reporting warehouse in Snowflake. Write the dbt model YAML configs defining surrogate keys, effective_start_date, effective_end_date, and is_current flag. Review with the data engineer who will implement the dbt incremental logic.
Data dictionary governance work — add 12 new business terms submitted by the product team's Q2 sprint (loan_foreclosure_flag, UPI transaction categories, GST invoice type codes). Route each term to the designated business data owner for definition approval in the catalog. Publish 7 terms already approved from last week.
Review a junior modeler's physical DDL changes for the new inventory domain — check for missing indexes on high-cardinality foreign keys, non-standard column naming (found 'CreatedDate' instead of 'created_at'), absent FK constraints, and undocumented nullable columns. Leave inline comments in the Git PR before end of day.
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field. B.Tech / B.E. (CSE, IT), BCA, or B.Sc (Computer Science / Statistics) are the most common entry routes in India.
Master's in Data Management, Computer Science (specialisation in databases), or MBA with analytics/IS concentration. IIIT-B PG Diploma in Data Science, IIT Madras BS Online in Data Science, or M.Tech (CS / IS) from NIT / IIIT are well-regarded.
IBM Certified Data Architect, Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) as a foundation, Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate, or Snowflake SnowPro Core for warehouse-side modelling. DAMA CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) is the strongest career signal for enterprise roles.
CDMP Associate-level is increasingly asked for at BFSI data modelling roles. Erwin Data Modeler Certified Professional and Sparx Systems EA certification are valued at TCS, Infosys, and Wipro delivery teams that use these tools on client engagements.
A Data Analyst or Database Developer with 2-3 years of hands-on schema design, ERD documentation, and SQL experience can transition into a junior Data Modeler role. Internal audit or business analyst backgrounds are also viable with a CDMP certification overlay.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Choosing the wrong grain for a fact table
Using production natural keys as dimension surrogate keys
Skipping a data profiling pass before modelling a new source
Confusing a many-to-many relationship with a one-to-many in the ERD
