The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
Bachelor's degree in any field — BBA, BA-Psychology, BA-Sociology, B.Com, and B.Tech are all common entry routes. A relevant degree matters far less than communication ability and comfort with high-stakes relationship-building at college campuses.
MBA-HR or PGDM-HR from XLRI Jamshedpur, TISS Mumbai, IIM Ahmedabad / Bangalore / Lucknow / Indore, MDI Gurgaon, NMIMS, Symbiosis (SCMHRD / SIBM), or Tier-1 IIM. An MBA-HR is strongly preferred by GCCs, MNCs, and large IT-services firms for campus recruitment manager and lead roles; it unlocks seats at Amazon India, Goldman Sachs, and Microsoft India campus TA teams.
Certifications (signal, not credential): LinkedIn Talent Solutions certifications, SHRM-CP, HRCI PHR, and assessments-platform certifications (Mettl, HackerEarth, Mercer|Mettl assessor programs). Knowledge of psychometric tools used in mass campus drives — Mercer|Mettl, TalentLitmus, Aspiring Minds AMCAT — is a practical hiring filter at IT-services firms.
Campus ambassador / student placement committee role → intern at a company's campus TA team → full-time campus recruiter (the most organic path); HR generalist at an IT-services firm → campus-team rotation → campus recruitment specialist; agency recruiter at ManpowerGroup, Quess, or TeamLease campus division → in-house campus TA at a product company. Liberal-arts and social-science graduates often outperform engineers in campus recruitment roles because the work is relationship and persuasion-heavy, not technical.
map the NIRFranking of your target company's campus list and memorise the placement season calendar (Season 1 = elite institutes, November–December; Season 2 = Tier-2 engineering, January–April); build a mock PPT campaign for a hard-to-hire college; practise a 10-minute pre-placement talk pitch; and shadow a live campus drive if your current company allows it. Understanding CTC structuring for freshers (basic, HRA, special allowance, joining bonus, bond clauses) is the line between a junior campus recruiter and a specialist at interview.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Treating tier labels as quality proxies and ignoring actual cohort performance data
Neglecting TPO relationship maintenance during the off-season (May–September)
Running unstructured, feedback-poor interview processes and not sharing outcomes with students
Treating offer reneging as inevitable and not investing in post-offer engagement
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
