Not the brochure version. The actual block-by-block reality of the role on a typical Tuesday.
Report to Shantinagar depot — sign in at the attendance register and collect the duty card from the traffic supervisor; review route number, scheduled departure time, and any special instructions (road diversion near KR Market, VIP corridor avoidance on MG Road)
Conduct pre-departure vehicle inspection on the assigned BMTC bus — check tyre pressure and condition, engine oil and coolant levels, brake response, mirror alignment, PA system, LED destination board, and fire extinguisher; sign the vehicle fitness register
Depart depot for first trip on Route 201 (Majestic to Electronic City) — maintain scheduled stop dwell times of 20-30 seconds at smaller stops, manage orderly boarding at Silk Board junction where peak-hour queues form even before 6 AM
Navigate the Silk Board–BTM Layout bottleneck during peak IT commuter rush — route can lose 15-25 minutes here on weekdays; use the depot radio to update the controller on expected delay; ETM shows 180 passengers boarded in the first trip alone
Complete second round trip and take a 20-minute break at Electronic City terminus — drink tea at the roadside stall, conduct a quick visual exterior tyre check, top up CNG at the en-route station if fuel gauge is below one-quarter
Manage a mid-route incident — an elderly passenger feels unwell near Agara Junction; stop at the next safe lay-by, radio the depot controller, assist the passenger in contacting family, wait for an auto-rickshaw before resuming; log the 12-minute unscheduled stop on the trip sheet
Return to depot after completing the daily trip target (5 round trips) — hand over the bus to the evening shift driver; complete the end-of-shift trip sheet (kilometres covered, trip count, ETM passenger tally, fuel drawn) and submit reconciled cash to the depot cashier; cash matches ETM printout within ₹20
Head home after sign-off — on-time rate logged as 84% for the day (Silk Board delay accounted for in the system); check WhatsApp group for tomorrow's duty roster posted by the traffic supervisor
The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
Class 8 pass (some state RTCs require Class 10 / SSLC) — formal academic qualification requirements are lower than most other transport sector jobs, but literacy and numeracy sufficient to read route boards, ticket tariffs, and digital display systems is essential.
First obtain a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) licence, then accumulate at least 1 year of driving experience before applying for the Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) / Transport endorsement — issued by the state RTO after a multi-stage test covering vehicle control, traffic rules, reversing, and hill driving. Badge-vehicle endorsement for school buses requires an additional passenger-vehicle endorsement (PVV) with a clean record check.
Candidates apply to state STC written examinations (general knowledge, traffic rules, vehicle mechanics basics) plus a practical driving assessment on the corporation's standard bus. KSRTC Karnataka, MSRTC Maharashtra, TNSTC Tamil Nadu, BMTC Bengaluru, DTC Delhi each conduct separate recruitment cycles with Class 10 as the minimum educational standard.
requires a valid HMV licence + clean traffic record (no challans for rash driving, DUI, or overloading) + a police character certificate. Many school contractors additionally mandate first-aid certification and a background check. Candidates with prior city-bus experience at state RTCs are preferred.
Defensive driving certification (offered by IATSS India, National Institute of Road Safety), refresher courses on AC bus operations, and digital ticketing system training (for smart-card and QR-code-based fare collection) all improve prospects within SRTCs and private operators.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Skipping the pre-departure vehicle inspection to save time
Ignoring cumulative fatigue on split-shift rosters
Letting ETM cash reconciliation discrepancies slide repeatedly
Leaving the driver seat to intervene physically in passenger disputes
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
