The real entry pathway for this role — eligibility, the qualifying exam, training, and licensing — in the order most people follow it.
Bachelor's degree in any discipline — BA, B.Com, BBA, B.Sc., or B.Ed. all qualify. Most domestic university counsellor roles and consultancy associate positions hire fresh graduates. A background in Psychology, Education, or Mass Communication is a minor advantage but not required.
Preferred for overseas-education track: Bachelor's or Master's degree, ideally with some exposure to international institutions. A master's from an abroad university (UK, Canada, Australia) is a significant credibility signal for clients considering the same destinations — several senior counsellors at IDP and Yocket hold degrees from their counselled destinations.
ICEF (International Consultants for Education and Fairs) Agent Training Course — widely recognised by international universities and used by most IDP, Edwise, and Canam counsellors. British Council's Education UK Agent Training. Australian Education International (AEI) agent certification for Australia-focused counsellors. Leap Finance's counsellor certification and Yocket Academy credentialing for ed-finance-aware counsellors.
strong familiarity with the application processes for your target market is more important than a specific degree. Domestic-admission counsellors must know JoSAA/CSAB counselling rounds, CUET, NEET counselling (MCC + state), CLAT, CAT/MAT/XAT, and DU CSAS portal mechanics. Overseas-education counsellors must know US Common App and QuestBridge, UK UCAS (including Track and clearing), Canada WES credential evaluation, and Australia CRICOS-registered providers.
IELTS/TOEFL proficiency awareness: counsellors advising students on overseas education must understand minimum band requirements by institution and country, English-medium exemptions, and Duolingo acceptance policies — clients ask about these in the first call.
Core skills you must own, the support skills you'll grow into, and the tools you'll have open all day.

The traps real practitioners wish someone had named for them in year one. Read these before you commit, not after.
Building a shortlist entirely from partner universities
Treating SOP review as grammar editing rather than narrative strategy
Underestimating visa documentation gaps until submission day
Over-concentrating on one destination country
Not setting clear scope of service in writing before the engagement
The upside that makes this work worth it, set honestly against the parts people quietly resent. Both sides, before you commit.
Straight answers to what people genuinely wonder before stepping into this work — no brochure spin.
Books, longreads, and references practitioners come back to.
