An Indian Army Soldier (Other Ranks) is recruited into one of five trade categories — Soldier General Duty (Sol GD), Soldier Technical (Sol Tech), Soldier Clerk/SKT, Soldier Nursing Assistant (Sol NA), or Soldier Tradesman — through a Common Entrance Exam (CEE) and Physical Fitness Test (PFT) administered at Army Recruiting Offices (AROs) across India. Since 2022, entry is under the Agnipath scheme: a 4-year Agniveer tenure at ₹30,000-40,000/month, with a 25% retention rate into regular Permanent Cadre after Year 4. Retained soldiers enter as Sepoys and can rise through the NCO/JCO ladder to ranks of Havildar (Sergeant equivalent), Naib Subedar, Subedar, and Subedar Major, culminating in the Honorary Commission to Captain for exemplary 30+ year careers. Deployed across peace stations, Line of Control (LoC) counter-insurgency grids, High Altitude Areas (HAA) from Ladakh to Arunachal, and humanitarian-aid operations, the Indian Army soldier is the tactical backbone of the world's second-largest standing army.
