Dental hygienists in India are Dental Council of India (DCI)-registered paradental professionals who perform oral prophylaxis (scaling and root planing, polishing), apply fluoride varnishes and pit-and-fissure sealants, take dental radiographs, chart periodontal pocket depths, conduct oral-cancer screening, and deliver structured patient education on brushing technique, interdental cleaning, and dietary habits. The Indian qualification pathway is a 2-year Diploma in Dental Hygiene after 10+2 (PCB) at a DCI-recognised dental college, or a 4-year B.Sc Dental Hygiene (less common, available at select colleges). Primary employers are private dental chains — Clove Dental (1,000+ clinics nationwide), Apollo White Dental, Dentzz, and Sabka Dentist — as well as corporate-hospital dental departments (Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals), dental college outpatient departments, and corporate/industrial health units. The profession is formally recognised under the NCAHP Act 2021 as a paradental profession but remains underrepresented in professional advocacy compared to nursing or physiotherapy.
