Scientific Officers at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre design, operate, and advance India's civilian nuclear programme across reactor engineering, radiochemistry, radiation protection, nuclear physics, and health physics. Entry is through OCES (Orientation Course for Engineering/Sciences) — a one-year residential training at the BARC Training School in Trombay after B.Tech or M.Sc — or via the DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS) which combines a PhD with government service. Officers are posted across the DAE complex: BARC Trombay (Mumbai), IGCAR Kalpakkam, RRCAT Indore, and IPR Gandhinagar. Promotion from Scientific Officer C to Outstanding Scientist (SO/H) is merit- and vacancy-based within a strict hierarchical ladder; the work is overwhelmingly on-site, security-cleared, and governed by the DAE's nuclear safety culture.
